How to Match Navy Blue Suit With Black Dress Date
Navy suits with black dresses
Hi everyone! We're deciding on what our bridal party will wear so I can send out swatches to my bridesmaids. Our December wedding colors are navy, ivory, gold, dark burgundy, and a bit of blush. We don't want any holiday aspects whatsoever so avoiding bright red at all costs. My fiance wants navy suit, white shirt, maybe a colored tie for him and his groomsmen. I don't like any colors right now for bridesmaids. I've looked at David's Bridal, Azazie, and JJsHouse. We had originally talked about burgundy but they are all too red and the wine/Cabernet colors are too purple. I'm leaning hard toward black which he is fine with. I love the classic, sleek look and the fact that everyone can use a black dress again. Black is very slimming and will contrast with the white tent, ivory linens, and candlelight everywhere. Do y'all think these contrast (groomsmen v. bridesmaids) enough for photos? Thank you in advance!

I think those look nice, black goes with everything. Have you looked into navy dress? Those are pretty dark and would match your theme.

Hi Sutina! We have looked at navy dresses. We're just scared that it'll be two different "navy" dyes and they'll be just close enough to look off.

Color swatches are key!! Order as many as you can- that way if one matches the navy of the suits or whatever, you can tell your bridesmaids where to order their dresses from and in what color. I had to wear blush as a bridesmaid and was told I could order it wherever I wanted. Everyone had a different shade of blush, and they all looked good together, but my blush was way more pink than everyone else and I felt super uncomfortable.

That makes sense. It's too bad you can't compare the swatches.

I think black dresses with a navy suit may photograph overall very dark for bridal party photos, but won't matter too much for other photos. Blue suits are very popular right now, maybe get swatches of something not quite Navy and it would look nice. You can break up the darkness with having white or ivory bridal bouquets for the girls

Thank you, April! I just ordered some this morning to do some comparisons! My friend let her girls do the same thing and everyone except one girl matched exactly, so I'm definitely asking them to order from one manufacturer!

Thank you, Leanne! I love super light bouquets, so I think we will definitely go the light route.

Have you considered navy dresses? Navy dresses are all the things you said about black (reusable, slimming, etc.).

I normally wouldn't pair black and navy like this, and would probably go with navy dresses instead. Navy and black can work together if paired really intentionally - for example if the guys are wearing navy tuxes with black lapels and black belt and shoes. Typically navy suits are paired with brown accessories and I personally think this would look a bit odd next to women in all black. I don't think the navy of the women's dresses need to match the suits perfectly - if all of the men are wearing the same shade of navy suit and all of the women are wearing the same shade of navy dress it will be fine if the suits and dresses are slightly different shades.

I'm not a fan of black and navy paired together. I would continue searching for a dark burgundy that you do like or I would go with blush dresses.
