Hello,
I am looking for help finding a blu-ray player that can be wall-mounted in vertical/upright position, behind a wall-mounted flat-screen tv.

My inlaws have a 55" Samsung HDTV that's wall-mounted about 7' up in the air on a blank wall, in a lofted-ceiling living room, for a very minimal and clean look. Fortunately they had an electrical outlet placed where they wanted the TV, but didn't have anything else installed since they won't ever have TV service other than HD antenna (which is hidden behind the TV).

We would like to upgrade their setup with a blu-ray player so they can borrow movies and play them for our 14 month old son, who they watch daily, and who is starting to watch Disney movies, etc. I haven't really found much in terms of vertical position blu-ray players other than Playstations and a small handful of very expensive options.

Is there anything new on the market that's perhaps closer to the >$100 price range? You'd think there would be a lot of these on the market now, since it seems everyone has a wall-mounted HDTV in their homes.

Thanks,
Brian

The LG BDP-730 is a slot-loading, 3D BD player with 4K upscaling and streaming apps that only runs $145 at Amazon:

Should work just dandy for your application unless you consider $145 "very expensive". It's also relatively light in weight at 3 pounds. The PS3 Slim weighs more than twice that - 7 pounds - and may be problematic to install behind the display because of that.

any cheaper options? i've never used a PS3, but I'm assuming the menu navigation to play a movie is a little more involved than my inlaws are going to want to deal with. They are in their late 60s and only last year got a cell phone - they are not tech-savvy in the slightest.

on this type of BD player, i don't see anything in the specs that says it is capable of vertical position -- is the only requirement to have a "slot load"?

Yes, you can use any slot-load drive in a vertical orientation.

what about a "portable" BD player with HDMI output - we used to have a DVD one - it had an AC adapter and pretty sure it worked on its side. do you think one of these will hold up over time, or just a waste of money?

Probably a waste of money if you can find one at all. Those portable DVD players were pretty poorly constructed and used cheap parts.

Apologies for the thread necromancy, but I was wondering what the situation is for vertical Bluray players these days? I have my LG B6 up on the wall, with all the cables going through a hole in the wall to a utility room. It's very neat and tidy. There's a big gap between the top half of the TV and the wall, in which I'd love to slot a vertical HDR 4k Bluray player. But sadly, as far as I can tell, there are no such things.

Anyone else solved the same problem?

It's too bad they phased things like this out, but we have had a small (35") Toshiba tv mounted on the wall in the kitchen for years that has a DVD slot in the side. It is still working perfectly about 10 years after we bought it.
